Jewelry Appraisals

What is a jewelry appraisal? A jewelry appraisal is an estimate of value for an item of jewelry, typically a pendant, ring, bracelet or chain, done on a date using current market value for gemstones and metals. It’s recommended to have jewelry appraisals reviewed and updated every few years. Ingrid’s Jewelers will provide appraisals for items purchased in the store for $1,000 or more at no charge.

Why are jewelry appraisals recommended? Prices of precious and semi-precious gemstones, and precious metals such as gold and platinum, fluctuate daily based on markets. Jewelry appraisals help ensure owners have current estimates for insurance purposes should an item be lost, stolen or damages. In addition, an appraisal can be helpful for estate planning or for personal tax records.

A jewelry appraisal will provide the most important aspects of a particular piece of jewelry to include:

  • A detailed description of the item

  • The type of stone(s)

  • Carat weight

  • The stone's cut

  • Quality

  • Clarity

  • Color

  • Item weight in grams

  • Type of metal used

  • Trading cost of the metal on the day of the appraisal and will provide an estimated value for insurance purposes. Lastly, the appraisal will include images of the appraised item.

  • Replacement cost of the item
